Strong Women/Strong Readers, Part I

Today is International Women’s Day when we celebrate strong women and the goal of gender equality.  I thought it would be fun (and appropriate) to share some book recommendations of a woman who plays strong characters on the screen (Hermoine! Belle!) and also is a committed feminist in “real” life (UN Ambassador!  HeForShe movement promoter!). Emma Watson is a big reader and book advocate. Instagram users can track her book recommendations by following Our Shared Shelf, where Ms. Watson promotes her feminist book selections.  Emma has also been known to stash books on public transportation in New York and London, which is a great idea, guaranteeing serendipitous book discoveries for commuters!

In a recent article in Entertainment Weekly, she shared the books she read in 2016, a diverse list that includes classics like George Orwell’s 1984 & Henry David Thoreau’s Walden and contemporary stories by Aziz Ansari, Oprah, and David Lynch. There are so many good recommendations in this article and it makes me respect this self-proclaimed bookworm and feminist even more.  Below is a slideshow of some of the book club recommendations. Happy Reading!
